These two large bucks locked their antlers while sparring during breeding season and were unable to get them to release. The bucks were locked facing each other, with the 10-pointer's right antler wrapped behind the 8-pointer's head and one tine jamming it in the eye. The 8-pointer had one of its tines piercing the 10-pointer's mouth. A motorist who was driving by and noticed the deer alerted the DNR. A DNR official arrived to the scene and said that the smaller deer was dead and the larger one was carrying the smaller deer around. She tried to knock the antlers apart without success as the larger deer got a burst of energy and retreated. She had no choice but to shoot the larger deer as there was a chance it could run into traffic. The passerby who alerted the DNR asked if he could take the venison, so the DNR official gave him a permit and he field dressed both deer on the spot. Nothing was left behind.
