I hunted a bit this season with a Ruger 44mag, and decided to get a better scope for next year. While shopping around, I talked to a guy who suggested getting the barrel ported as well. I know there is a business in my home state (Michigan) that started that whole process years ago, but before I moved forward, I thought I'd see if anyone has done it, but wished they hadn't. Input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have found that porting does not make that much difference in felt recoil in a .44 mag. I have fired ported revolvers and non ported revolvers and my recovery time for follow up shots was almost identical. The only time I have ever felt that porting made a significant difference was on a S&W 500 Mag. One of my good friends is a gunsmith and built a custom barrel for his Smith 500. We shot it before he ported it, and the gun almost flew out of our hands. After porting, it felt about like a 44 mag recoil. If the recoil really bothers you that much, then try shooting 44 specials out of your revolver rather than full load 44 mag cartridges. My opinion is NOT to port your 44 mag. I think you will be disappointed with the results. Use the money you save to buy a set of quality shock absorbing grips and still have money left over to buy some more ammo for that beast.

Thank you bluesea. I actually received the same opinion (with the same logic) over the summer. A guy at my gun club also suggested that since I use the .44 as a close range hunting weapon, and not for competition, that the effects of porting would not be worth altering a really beautiful gun. "You really only expect ONE necessary shot anyway." That made sense to me. I appreciate your time in answering my question, and I'm going to leave the gun as it is.

I ported my 460 sw t/c encore. 15" barrel. Had EABrown do it. put the most radical muzzle brake I could find. JP Howitzer brake. Reduced the recoil 75% or so. No barrel rise, just an intense instantanous recoil. before muzzle brake I could not hold it down. It would recoil up over my head. Check EABCO.COM
